Ok, I'm gonna try this thread again. Still need a bandsaw blade as well as a router, fretting tools, plane and a spokeshave. Mockup:Story:My dad and I are building a guitar from a slab of walnut we have laying around that used to be a desk. I dunno how often I'll update because my income fluctuates. Specs:Body: Walnut body w/black burst (sprayed ebony stain) and tung oil (about 5 coats). HS, 1 vol, 1 tone, 3-way wired for auto-tap. The angled single coil is actually gonna be tilted the other way. Recessed Gotoh TOM/stringthru Black hardware Neck: Walnut neck (D-shaped) Indian rosewood fretboard (Phil's darkest piece) 24 jumbo frets (I'm thinking 6130 or something similar in stainless steel) No inlays or binding Tung oiled neck 25.5" scale Gotoh tuners UPDATE 1:I already cut the wood down to size, sanded it, and drew the body onto the big slab (gonna make two thinlines and glue them back-to-back) and transfered the neck dims to the stock. The neck that I'm using to steal dims from is a 25.5" scale with 24 frets (it's from my Kaman GTX33. That's as close to a Soloist as I can get). Pics before I drew on the wood: Neat-looking burl Here's the neck stock. Gonna plane that bitch down. UPDATE 2:Here's the flatwork for the single coil. Made of some scrap bloodwood and incorrect tools. Models on the right. Gonna make another single coil, but here's the old one. It cracked... UPDATE 3:Got the fretboard today, almost ready to go. Decided to let phil make the bobbins.

I don't really like the sound of it. I like it towad the middle and have the bass end a little more trebly than normal, hence the reversed pup angle. I wanna do something different anyway. I'm so sick of the standard pup configs.

This is your first build?
And your making homemade pickups? This thread is win.

Just making homemade covers. wood expands and contracts, so making a bobbin out of it would be very bad.
And yeah, first build. stalled until I can fix my shitty mistakes. almost ruined my wood...

Yeah Jim, I'm totally serious. The collateral is a good idea, as it's my dad's router, and he'll freak if he doesn't get it back.. Even though he has like 3.
Not sure where the bits are though..

I only have 1 bit. Just a double-fluted 1/4" straight bit. It's good for pup cavities and stuff. I just need one to round off the edges of the body.

Well..erm...Shit, if I post a pic of the Bit I have will you be able to tell what it is?
EDIT: Shit, my dad has the router with him. It's kinda small, and had a little indent in the side, and it's kinda cylinder looking.

Idk what you have (no pic) but what I need is a roundover bit. 1/4" should be good. Pics:

Jim is that a pic of someone making a hand saw handle?

Post by Invader Jim on May 18, 2009 1:21:41 GMT -5
Yeah, jon. My dad has a hand-made oak cane with an old-style saw handle (it has the overhangs) It looks badass. Those saw handles are a lost art, man.

I hope he says ok. I really need a router and have no cash. Figured you'd run into trouble so I decided to let go of that Hofner project of mine for awhile.
